1. The question

 

“I’m always on edge and can’t relax, and I just know my anxiety is spilling over onto my girls and I hate it! What can I do to stop passing it onto them?” 

 


 

2. Our answer

 

Oh friend, we’ve both been where you are.

It sounds like you likely had some anxiety passed onto you from your own parents, and yeah…

Our kids definitely absorb our energy.

We often talk about co-regulation, but we also have to keep in mind that co-dysregulation is a very real thing and perpetuates generational cycles.

But here’s the deal…

Anxiety is NOT the enemy.

It’s actually your body’s way of trying to keep you safe (watch Inside Out 2 if you haven’t yet). 

Yeah, anxiety is overly dramatic and a bit too clingy, but deep down, it’s just trying to help.

So instead of fighting it or trying to eliminate it altogether, try this…

➡️ When you recognize your anxiety revving up (think thought spirals, tight chest, quick breath) pause and say out loud:

“Hi, Anxiety. I see you there and I know you’re just trying to protect me. I don’t need you to go away altogether, but I do need you to quiet down.” 

It might sound silly, but giving your anxiety a voice (and more importantly, BOUNDARIES) is one of the fastest ways to get out of the storm and observe it from the outside.

It moves you out of your survival brain and back into your prefrontal cortex.

Your emotional temperature will start to come down, and THAT’S when your kids will stop absorbing your anxiety, and start feeling more anchored by your calm instead.

Now, for many of us, a quick pause and mindset shift like this can work wonders. 

But if your nervous system is stuck in high-alert mode (like ours used to be), these strategies will only take you so far.
