“Why do I have such a hard time playing with my kids?”
2. Our answer
Not only do we hear this a lot… we FEEL it.
You love them like crazy, but when they say, “Will you play with me?”... your soul quietly whispers:
“Please… dear God… no.”
And then the guilt sets in, right?
You want to be the playful parent who builds forts and plays pretend, but after a long day, you’d rather scroll, snack, and just quietly exist.
You don’t have any motivation to play, and that makes sense.
But here’s the thing most people don’t realize…
Motivation is not what creates action. It’s actually the other way around.
👉 Action is what creates motivation.
Your brain will almost always choose the path of least resistance. It’s constantly telling you, “Let’s just relax first, and then maybe later we’ll feel like it.”
But spoiler alert… you won’t.
The science is clear. It’s the act of actually doing that flips the switch.
So when you take that tiniest first step (like sitting on the floor, or even just saying, “Sure… I’ll play for five minutes”)...
Your brain releases a bit of dopamine. And that little hit of dopamine is what’ll give you just enough energy to keep on going.
In short… don’t wait to feel ready. You just need to start, and then the motivation will follow.
And this applies to ALL things…
👉 Don’t want to play? Sit down anyway.
👉 Don’t want to exercise? Put on the shoes.
👉 Don’t want to connect? Say the first word.
