"I've made LOTS of mistakes."
Jun 05, 2025
Hello, Happy Human! 👋
We're here with our weekly 3 things...
1️⃣ A question from our community
2️⃣ Our actionable tips
3️⃣ A resource from our toolkit
1. The question
“I’m trying to turn things around but my kid feels distant. I’ve made lots of mistakes (yelling, being too harsh) and I carry a lot of guilt about it all. I want to reconnect but it feels like the damage is already done.”
2. Our answer
If you’ve felt this way… you’re not alone.
So many parents and grandparents inside of our community want to do things differently… but are left wondering how to close the gap between past ruptures and future connection.
So step 1… realize that we ALL lose it sometimes.
We yell. We slam doors. We say things we wish we could take back.
And in those moments, our kids don’t just hear the words… we’re impacting and shaping their nervous systems.
(It’s like their bodies register the rupture before their minds can even make sense of it.)
But here’s the empowering truth…
Rupture is inevitable. Trauma is NOT.
And the difference all boils down to REPAIR.
It’s the act of circling back (whether it’s 5 minutes or 5 years later) and saying…
“I see how I hurt you. I take full responsibility. And I still love you.”
And from a neurobiological perspective, this is HUGE.
Repair will help your kid:
Down-regulate their stress response so they don’t stay stuck in fight or flight mode
Rebuild emotional trust so they learn that relationships can recover and grow stronger
Form a healthier self-narrative so they don’t internalize your behavior as their fault
And repair also rewires YOU. It’s how you build new patterns in your own brain, breaking cycles in real-time.
So it’s never about being the perfect parent.
It’s ALL about being the kind of parent who’s willing to make things right.
And it’s NEVER too late to start.
So whether your kid is 3, 13, or 30… the moment you start to repair, you start rewriting the story between the two of you.
You can show them what real accountability looks like, and it’s one of the greatest gifts you could ever give them.
