1. The question

 

"I feel like I know all of the right things to say and do, but I still lose it on my kids and partner. It’s like I just can’t use the things I’ve been learning. What am I doing wrong?"

 


 

2. Our answer

 

We get this question a lot (and even used to ask it ourselves).

You know the deal… we care deeply and want to do better, but then we snap, shut down, or spiral anyway.

But please hear this…

It’s not because you’re broken or not trying hard enough.

It’s because you can’t will yourself into regulation if your nervous system is stuck in survival mode.

And the first step to real change isn’t achieving any sort of “perfect calm.”

It’s all about catching yourself before you fully spiral.

Here’s how to practice it:

1️⃣ Notice the Activation

 When you feel your heart starting to race, your jaw clenching, or your chest tightening…

Pause and say out loud (or internally if it’s too uncomfortable):

"I’m getting activated."

This tiny moment of noticing will create space between the trigger and your reaction.

2️⃣ Interrupt the Story

Instead of telling yourself, "They’re being so disrespectful!" or "I can’t take this anymore!" shift to curiosity. You can ask yourself something like…

"What’s happening in me right now?"

This will shift the activity from the emotion center of your brain to the logic center, keeping you from pouring gasoline on the fire.

3️⃣ Offer Yourself a Mini-Reset

Take just one deep breath with a slow, deliberate exhale.

Intentionally unclench your hands and drop your shoulders.

It won’t "fix" everything in an instant, but it WILL slow the spiral and give you a shot at thoughtfully responding instead of emotionally reacting.

And remember…

You can’t just think your way to regulation if your biology is out of tune.

Too many parenting programs throw countless cognitive strategies at you, but if your nervous system is stuck in survival mode, those strategies will feel impossible to access when you need them most.
