1. The question
“Do you have any tips for raising kids with ADHD? There are just SO many meltdowns and it all just feels like too much.”
2. Our answer
Yup… we know that feeling all too well. It’s EXHAUSTING.
And on the days when our patience is already worn thin (which lets be real… is most days), we find that our own stress just makes everything worse.
Because here’s what’s going on beneath the surface:
➡️ Their ADHD symptoms spike → you feel overwhelmed.
➡️ Your stress rises → their nervous system mirrors yours.
➡️ Their stress rises → their ADHD symptoms spike even more.
And around and around it goes until either one (or both) of you snaps.
Yes… kids with ADHD already struggle with impulse control, emotional regulation, and sustained focus, but when they sense our stress, their brain shifts into survival mode, making it even harder for them to access those skills.
So here’s the shift…
You can interrupt your own stress cycle so you don’t exacerbate their ADHD symptoms.
For example, here’s a simple practice you can try the next time you feel your stress starting to peak:
1️⃣ PAUSE — Before you react, notice what’s happening in your own body. Are your shoulders up by your ears? Is your jaw tight? Is your voice rising?
2️⃣ RESET — Do one quick release: take 3 slow breaths, drop your shoulders, unclench your jaw. Even better, put a hand on your chest and exhale audibly.
3️⃣ RESPOND — Soften your tone by 20%. Slow your words down. Add warmth to your eyes or even a gentle touch if your kid is open to it.
It may sound simple, but this will signal to your kid’s nervous system: “You’re safe. I’m safe. We can get through this together.”
Because when your nervous system settles, theirs can start to settle too, quieting those ADHD symptoms.
