1. The question
“I watch your videos on Instagram, but I still lose control pretty much every day. Nothing works and I feel like I’m too far gone.”
2. Our answer
We know the feeling, but we’ve got you beat.
About five years ago, after having spent 15 years learning about (and teaching) emotional regulation (Greg as a doctor of psych and Jenilee as an occupational therapist)…
We found ourselves losing control pretty much every day too.
It makes sense. If we take a look at what’s around us (whether it be on a global scale or just within the walls of our own homes)…
We’re surrounded by chaos.
There’s not a single nervous system on the planet that was ever meant to carry this much overstimulation and emotional weight.
And sure… we’ll catch some tips and tricks on social media, but unless we dig in to do the work…
Unless we show up with intention, consistency, and continued practice…
Things won’t change.
But we’re here to tell you that change is possible.
We CAN break old cycles and write new patterns. We CAN stop losing our cool and start showing up as the regulated parents we want to be.
The fact that you’re even reading this is a fantastic first step, because change is SO much easier when you’re not doing it alone.
We’re going to keep dripping out education and strategies, but you have to do the work of intentionally putting them into practice.
For example, right now…
Set a reminder on your phone to go off every three hours (e.g., 9 AM, 12 PM, 3 PM, 6 PM, 9 PM).
Have it read: Practice self-regulation.
And when the reminder goes off…
Take at least one minute (but more if you’ve got the time) to breathe, drop your shoulders, unclench your jaw, and notice the feelings inside your body.
Self-regulation takes time, effort, and repetition. Just like any other thing we’re trying to get good at.
You just need to start.
And whenever you’re ready for some serious work…
