1. The question
“I almost always feel totally tapped out and like I’ve got nothing left to give. But I need to keep giving and so I just feel stuck.”
2. Our answer
This sounds a lot like burnout… and yeah… so many of us feel this way but don’t have the bandwidth to even name it.
But first off… burnout isn’t some sort of personal failure.
It’s your nervous system saying, “Hey… I can’t carry all of this anymore.”
But the good news is there are ways to come back from it.
It begins when we stop trying to “push through” and just start asking ourselves…
“What would support my nervous system right now?”
Here’s why this works…
When you’re burnt out, your nervous system isn’t just “tired”... it’s in survival mode.
That means your brain is prioritizing safety above all else (much of the time, it leads to snapping or a depressive-like shut down).
And the more you ignore it and try to push through, the more your system will interpret danger (making your capacity shrink even more).
But the moment you pause and ask, “What would support my nervous system right now?... you send a different signal.
It’s one of SAFETY. And it might look like:
- Straightening your spine, dropping your shoulders, unclenching your jaw
- Sipping on a glass of cold water
- Texting a friend or calling a family member
- Breathing in for 4, and out for 6
- Saying out loud… “I’m overwhelmed. I need a break”
- Shaking out your hands, stretching, or stomping your feet
When your nervous system feels safe, your whole brain comes back online.
You become more patient, more present, and more like the parent you want to be.
