1. The question
“Mornings feel like a battlefield in our home and we seem to always have such a rough start to the day. Any tips?”
2. Our answer
Oh yeah…
This is one of the most common struggles we hear from parents (and have felt within our own home).
First off, it’s not because you’re doing anything wrong. It’s because mornings stack three of the biggest stressors onto your nervous system all at once:
👉 Time Pressure. The clock is ticking, and your brain interprets “late” as a threat.
👉 Transitions. Kids are shifting from sleep to wake, home to school, cozy to structured. Transitions are hard for nervous systems of ANY age.
👉 Demands. Clothes, breakfast, teeth, backpacks, lunches. We have dozens of micro-decisions all before 8AM.
Put all of that together and your nervous system is primed to tip into fight-or-flight. Which means… yelling, snapping, threats, and guilt.
So here’s the thing we need to remember…
✅ Regulation is contagious.
Think of kids as like tuning forks. They resonate with the emotional “frequency” that’s around them.
If we’re rushing, sighing, moving sharply, they pick up on it and their stress spikes.
But if we soften our tone, slow our movements, and breathe through the chaos, we’ll send “safety cues” that literally help their body settle.
In short, your nervous system sets the emotional climate of your home. Your kids don’t just hear your words, they feel your state.
So before you ever go to see them in the morning, take a moment (literally a minute or two) to check your emotional temperature and put into practice strategies to regulate yourself first.
