1. The question

 

“I feel like I’m failing. I want to be present and patient, but I’m so exhausted and can barely get through the day. I know all the things I should do but just don’t have the capacity to actually do them. I feel like a mess and I’m just not the mom I want to be.”

 


 

2. Our answer

 

We get messages like this every week (and also still feel that way ourselves sometimes).

But this isn’t failure. It’s just a mismatch between expectations and reality.

And that expectation gap is what’s crushing us.

We think we’re supposed to be some superhero combo of therapist, chef, emotional anchor, house manager, logistics coordinator, bedtime guru, snack curator, AND ALSO joyful, calm, and present throughout.

Think about it… that kind of expectation would break anyone.

So no, you’re not falling short. You’re just trying to meet an impossible standard in an overwhelming world that doesn’t give you a second to breathe.

If we want things to change… we need to lesson the gap between what we expect of ourselves and what’s actually realistic.

We’re not saying give up on certain things, but just get real.

Your calm doesn’t need to be constant and your presence doesn’t need to be social-media-worthy.

Scale back the expectation that this world has thrust upon you and give yourself permission to stop trying to do everything for everyone all at once.

Especially when you haven’t taken much time to do anything for yourself.
