“Deep breaths don’t work!”

May 08, 2025

Hello, Happy Human! 👋

We're here with our weekly 3 things...

1️⃣ A question from our community

2️⃣ Our actionable tips

3️⃣ A resource from our toolkit

1. The question

"I try to take a deep breath to stay calm, but it doesn’t work! I still end up snapping and feel like I’m broken.”

2. Our answer

Okay, first things first.

You are NOT broken.

Here’s the thing…

A deep breath is great, but it’s definitely not a magic button.

When your nervous system is already in fight-or-flight, telling yourself to calm down is like telling a volcano not to erupt.

Your body can’t just switch over into calm. It needs a release.

So instead of trying to suppress all of that emotional energy… intentionally move it

✅ You can try:

  • Shaking out your hands like you’re flinging water off them
  • Pushing hard against a wall
  • Doing jumping jacks or running in place
  • Letting out a long, loud exhale (bonus points if it’s dramatic)
  • Tensing your whole body for 5 seconds… then releasing

These small behaviors will help discharge some of that nervous system energy so it doesn’t come out as yelling.

We just need to remember…

Regulation isn’t about keeping it together all the time. We’re supposed to feel BIG feelings

It’s all about letting the energy move through you in safe, intentional ways.

And you’d like a free tool to help…

3. From our toolkit

Once you’ve moved the energy, that’s when your thinking brain can come back online.

And that’s where our 5 Steps to Regulate come in.

We put together this quick, printable guide to help you anchor yourself after the storm hits, or better yet, before it does.
